connell mcshane to sort this all out. connell: i look forward to these transitions. we will have more on that story coming up in our hour as well. including reaction to what might happen next, but we will talk about chris christie, governor of new jersey cannot shake the spotlight over the george washington bridge controversy. four presents a candidate steve forbes will talk to us about how much this might hurt christie come 2013. it is enough to turn you back to cash just about. and neiman marcus to the list of retailers who customers have had their personal information compromised when they are using. that story. general motors making the rounds of the detroit auto show. and the big story, alex rodriguez firing back. another lawsuit to try to stop his suspension from madeley baseball. his attorney will be with us in the studio this hour. coming up on "markets now."

all right. pretty jampacked show we have if i may say so myself. dagen: so much on tv yesterday could not watch it all. connell: we will talk about that, and the a-rod thing. dagen: starts coming off of some of this morning losses. nicole petallides with more. nicole: and action-packed hour indeed. the nasdaq composite higher. the s&p slightly lower, the dow down 14 points, 16,423. the fury next taking a breather. volatility, a lot of stock they have been covering, earnings season getting underway. now we will watch a lot of the bank earnings. the jobs report in which showed obviously americans still looking for work. general motors, no you will be
11:02 am
covering the general motors stories as well. it turns out they are the closest it has ever been to reinstating a dividend. so we did have the chief financial officer talking about reinstating the dividend. the last time general motors paid a dividend was back in may of 2008. it is interesting to keep an eye on this one getting folks to reinstate a dividend for gm. back to you. connell: lets talk on the latest on governor chris christie and the controversy around the george washington bridge scandal. positive dock has released, no evidence linking the governor to those lane closures directly. dagen: commenting on the governor's handling of the issue this week. here's what he had to say. >> he took the bull by the horns, he has held people accountable, he fired people and it is a very big difference in how this administration handles a lot of things whether it is
11:03 am
irs, benghazi, keep your health insurance if you want it. nobody has been fired over that. what we're seeing is a big difference. if he comes out of this untarnished, this could set him up for 2016. dagen: joining us now, steve forbes. welcome. that may be the case, but this fisher has opened chris christie's reputation. democrats in his own state and nationwide will make sure it gets bigger and bigger the closer you get to a possible presidential run. >> even if you have nothing new to report, you keep repeating it which a stark contrast to the cover the irs scandal not to mention other scandals. he has to just ride through the storm, he has a chance now to start to begin to get his own agenda out there. he has state of the state where he can propose things to legislature, get on that.
11:04 am
next year if he decides to run coming up with a positive program, i'm the kind of guy who gets it done, let's start to change the narrative. right now just pray to the fact they will be after him. you really can't get him, they will try to tarnish him. connell: there are reports of other issues the governor will have to deal with. >> that is part of the thing, throw a lot of investigations out there, see if something sticks. connell: as we have been talking about, you mentioned the irs, benghazi, other things that have come up. in those scandals and others in the past think things come out in bits and pieces. so could this be more for christie? after that news conference, if anything else comes out, big, big political trouble.
11:05 am
>> if he was directly involved. yes, it is over. but if they don't get him, and i don't think they will, just showing investigations. that is how you drag somebody down. they try the investigation throwing out massive subpoenas, you could fight these things back, but on this particular scandal, just have to ride it through, stick to your story, somebody may even end up in jail for this thing because violation of federal law and traffic and all that kind of thing but some point, this is a sense of timing, you have to come up with your own positive agenda for new jersey and eventually for the country. nicole: maybe different issues, can he run for the presidency
11:06 am
with that as his headwind? >> will have to see what happens in november, he has a year with the republican governors association getting around the country and starts laying a foundation, and when he comes out running 2015. he is a man who has demonstrated ability to deal with the crisis, i think people are eventually going to begin to feel this thing compared to the irs intimidating thousands of people is like jaywalking. arendt is what happened, but not on the scale of what happens when they start coming after people for political reasons. dagen: who would you look for presidency? >> i think people have benefited executive ability and positive ability for growth. thank you.
11:07 am
dagen: a rally, if you have seen this movie before, sequels of it in store in the coming year. the principal and head of fixed income overseeing three quarters of the clans of dollars in bond assets. it is always a pleasure and honor to have you here. do you think this will continue to happen where you see a backup in yield, but bad news on the economy and another rally in treasuries? >> i think that is a pattern we have been seeing. mediocre jobs is something symptomatic of an economic recovery that is not getting a lot of steam because there's so much difference for recoveries. the consumer leverage themselves and that got them fired up to hire people.
11:08 am
now companies are really trying to be very careful about adding new hires which can increase their overhead particularly if they believe topline revenue growth will come in at 3% or less which seems to be the consensus of the different companies that my credit analyst speak with. dagen: is that a feasible strategy? >> i think we're right at the top of that right now. that said, we will pierce it down the line, but for the next couple of months or so it is probably a good place to put some way to work as long as you can be nimble the other side. dagen: are people too optimistic about the growth this year?
11:09 am
>> you are correct, a lot of economists, the consensus is more toward 3% real growth for 2014, but certain the market price action shows a healthy skepticism when it comes to that kind of a forecast. dagen: in recent locations you have been on, you like invisible bonds. talk about the pretax equivalents you can still get in certain parts of that market. >> sure. if you look at the 20, 30 years, long maturities you can buy miscible bonds roughly from aaa to single-a credit quality, four and a quarter percent. when you run all the numbers with the obamacare tax and the top marginal tax bracket, you're getting 7%.
11:10 am
and if you have the privilege to live in a high income taxed state like you do in new york or out in california, you can get pretax equivalent yields approaching 8%. i think they make a lot of sense for at least a portion of your money looking to get additional income. dagen: i like the way you said that, if you have the privilege of living in a high tax state. >> only 3% income tax in pennsylvania, so you got us beat by quite a bit. dagen: thank you. it was a pleasure, please come back very soon. thank you for taking the time, as always. connell: a story on tickets targeting. they are selectively selling tickets for the championship game, we will tell you how they are going about that coming up.
